Indian mindset has an affinity to second hand goods. This is not a derogatory remark.
Used cars are a part of this affinity. There is a bustling market in India for this product and looking at the potential it will only grow upwards.
In the last decade or so car manufacturers seem to have poured by the dozens from all over the world and flooded the Indian car bazaar. In 2007 almost 22 different models will be made available for Indian buyers. Whether these models are genuine upgrades or cosmetic variations remains to be seen.
An obvious off shoot of this thrust has been the used car market. Indians natural affinity for second hand goods drives the market. All of us want to sell the old car and get a new one. This urge also drives the used car market.
Used car business has caught the attention of car manufacturers. In addition to new cars they are also offering a platform for used cars after certifying them and giving a guarantee to the buyer.
When going for a used car you must do some pre selection research and ensure that the car you intend buying meets the minimum requirements for safety, pollution, road worthiness, documentation, etc. Accordingly quote a price. Very old cars can be cheap but may require high maintenance. Also the insurance companies may be reluctant to insure such a vehicle.
Auto magazines and some media channels have dedicated space for used car segment. There is a lot of relevant information that is helpful whenever you intend to buy pre owned cars.
Web sites are another source for good quality data on used cars. A regular visit to these sites provides insights into this segment and can add value when you are ready for the transaction. This applies to both sellers and buyers of used cars.
More often than not agents, dealers or middle men get involved in the used car deals. These categories of people are generally slippery and may fleece you on some stupid pretext. You will be better off making direct deals with owners which will save you unnecessary bother and some money too.
Used car market is not limited to newer models only. It also applies to classic and vintage automobiles. Many a sellers and buyers are in this trade and making good profits. Valuable makes and models are generally purchased long term and are good investment options.
All in all the used car segment is an exciting area provided you have patience and knowledge and some money to play around.
