Why the Rich Get Richer

Author: Tony Papajohn

You have heard, "The rich get richer and the poor get poorer." It’s more than just a cliché. It’s true.

And the same principle also powers other well-known cliché’s and figures of speech like, "Success breeds success, the Midas touch, it’s a vicious cycle, and "If I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck at all."

And it’s what lies behind the concept of "the comfort zone," the imaginary boundary beyond which we won’t go.

These are all true because we recreate what’s familiar to us. The rich get used to being rich. So they recreate internally all the familiar sights, sounds, feelings, and thoughts that lead to being rich. And they get richer.

Conversely, the unlucky, accident-prone, and chronically in debt do the same thing, only in reverse and with predictable results. The perennially successful, those caught in a destructive pattern, and the perennially unsuccessful do the same thing.

We tread the same familiar ground and the mind repeatedly recreates it in experience.

When we find something familiar and establish a comfort level, the mind creates and recreates and recreates the experience automatically. Therefore, we attract the same circumstances again and again and again.

Whenever someone comes to me and says, "I failed at this and that and something else," I realize that this person unwittingly recreates the familiar internal pattern of failure again and again.

So here is how I go about making success familiar. In your mind’s eye, let your imagination form a success image that inspires you. Make this mental picture the realization of a long and fervently-desired dream. Put yourself in the picture.

Set this image in motion. See this scene as if watching yourself on a movie screen. Now "step into the image of yourself" and see the scene as if through your own eyes. See, hear, and feel as if this success movie was happening in real time.

Ask yourself, "What’s missing? What will make this more complete? What details can I add that will make this more compelling?" Trust your mind to add any details that occur to you. Let your wonderful creative mind complete this inspiring mental movie.

Now run the movie again. As before, see the scene (with the new details) as if on a movie screen. Again, "step into the image of yourself," let the movie run as you see the scene from the vantage point of your own eyes, and ask "What’s missing?"

Then let your imagination fill in more details. Then repeat the process. Then repeat it again. Then repeat it again!

Do this until it almost becomes boring! Do it so many times a part of you says "Not again!"

Before long, the very thought of this outcome generates the whole sequence in a flash. This is similar to seeing the first few moments of an episode of your favorite sitcom that you’ve seen several times and saying "I’ve seen this one" and recalling the lines!

And this is what makes this technique effective. You’ve been over the same mental and emotional ground so many times in such a short period of time that it seems like "old hat."

In other words, the whole sequence seems familiar and, even though is not real yet, you can’t help feeling more comfortable in this mental and emotional space. And that’s exactly what you want.

At this point, call to mind the next time you face a real life situation that will lead to your desired success outcome. Re-experience your "boring" success movie and notice how it makes you feel.

When you hear internal dialogue that sounds like "Yeah. This is no big deal! I can do this!" trust your mind to recreate this familiar situation in real life.

And expect to get rich and continue to get richer.
