The Five Most Common Mistakes Women Make When Applying Makeup

Author: Asuncion Parra

We may read all the right beauty magazines, watch all the right beauty shows, and even can tell when someone else has her makeup all wrong. So why is it so difficult to get it right for ourselves? Makeup does not have to be that scary or that mysterious. It can be easy and fun.
There are common errors in makeup that plague many women. My goal is to clarify and simplify the not-so mysterious world of cosmetics.

Mistake #1: “I don’t have to wear any makeup.”
Now, I know that I said mistakes in applying makeup, but I felt that this needs to be addressed. I have never met a woman who couldn’t benefit from a bit of makeup. Unless you are a goddess or 5 years old, we all need makeup to some degree or another. It is just common sense. We are a world based on first impressions and what you see is what you get. Like it or not, it is our world. A bit of concealer, a touch of lip gloss, or a sweep of rouge on the apples of the cheeks can do wonders without conforming to a society obsessed with beauty. And also, don’t get me wrong, I like beauty. It is not just superficial.

Mistake #2: Wearing the Wrong Formula for Your Skin Type
I see this going on so much today. It is, perhaps, because we have so much variety of cosmetics to choose from that we make mistake #2. Women with dry skin should not be using powder foundations. It will accentuate the dryness. The same rule applies to mature skin and powder foundation. It accentuates fine lines and wrinkles due to the mica content. This mistake began to surface with the popularity of mineral foundations. I have nothing against mineral foundations. I, myself love them and use them often. I use them on clients. I have even given mineral makeup to my teenage daughter to use. I feel that strongly that mineral makeup is a wonderful cosmetic tool. However, I feel just as strongly in saying buyer beware. Test it first. If you have lines and wrinkles, it is mistake #2. Opt for a mineral makeup in liquid or cream.

Mistake #3: Squinty Eyes!
Eye liner is a girl’s best friend, just ask Cleopatra. It can also be a girl’s darkest foe. In other words, it can make or break you. You have to wear it correctly in order for it to be a benefit and be attractive. If you have small eyes, lining them incorrectly will give you small, squinty eyes. This is not to say that you should throw away your liner. No, instead, line your eyes on both the top and bottom of the eyes without connecting the lines at the outer edges of the eyes. You will be amazed at the difference.

Mistake #4: Stick to One Focal Point
When applying makeup, choose your best feature and make that your focal point. It should not compete with other features. For example, have you ever seen a woman wearing a dark lipstick, dark eye shadow, and dark blush all in the same color family? It is too obstructing. You feel uncomfortable because your eyes don’t know wear to look first. Instead, pick a focal point like the eyes. Play up the eyes and go easy on the rest. Wear a soft, neutral lipstick and a soft, subtle blush. If you have luscious lips, play upon those lips with a darker tone of lipstick and a gloss. Relax on the eyes. Keep them soft and simple. Clean. Relax on the rouge. Opt for a soft earthy tone so as not to compete with the lips. If you want red lips and dark eyes, try a red gloss instead. It will give a sheer, red color to the lips and not compete with the smoky or dark shadow.

Mistake #5: Groom Your Brows, Please
The brows are the frames for our eyes. They give expression and life to our face. If you get it wrong, you instantly send out the wrong message. I have seen women with beautiful eyes ignore the brows. They do not realize the potential of the brow. I recommend you take a good look at yourself in the mirror. Are your brows too scarce? Do you have tiny hairs outside of the brow area? Are your brows so thick that they overpower your face? Remove any hairs that are outside of the brow area. If you don’t know what style of brows best suits your face, find you natural shape and go with it. Just fine tune the natural shape. You may trim longer hairs that extend above or below the brow with scissors. There are great books written to help find your perfect brow. My favorite is Beautiful Brows by Nancy Parker and Nancy Kalish.
