Google Bans Adwords Ads from Custom Writing Companies. Who benefits?
Author: Walter Wild
Google announced that starting June 1st, 2007, it will no longer permit adwords(tm) ads from Custom Writing Companies (Academic Writing firms) in an effort to support the large-scale university program to combat plagiarism at schools and universities in the USA. This article shows that such move in no way reduces plagiarism, yet rather benefits large custom writing firms and university professors employed in such companies.
1. Extra entry barriers. The new move will erect additional entry barriers in the custom writing industry. As a result, new start up firms will no longer be able to quickly start operations and pose serious competition to the well-established custom writing firms. Previously, a new academic assistance company could use Google Adwords and immediately get market exposure. Now it would take several months, maybe a year to get a decent exposure.
2. Restrained market forces and Professors’ vested interest. As academic assistance provides such high returns, many university professors work for custom writing companies. The market forces and the growing number of competitors in the industry constantly reduces the profit margins. Over the past 5 years, the prices for custom term papers fell on average by 30%, so did the writers’ earnings. By erecting entry barriers because of restricted marketing (Adwords tools are no longer permitted) and by reducing the competition on the market, the prices for custom essays and term papers just like the professor’s wages are expected to rise. University professors who also work for custom writing companies clearly benefit from reduced competition on the market.
3. "Low quality firms" hypothesis. It is a common knowledge that the majority of the low-quality firms based in Pakistan, India and Russia serve as a deterrent factor for the whole industry. Basically, a student who wants to cheat yet save money, orders from one of such low-priced but unprofessional companies and gets burnt. It means that in the future such student will view the whole industry with suspicion and will hesitate to order from that company as well as from others. With the new marketing restrictions initiated by the universities and supported by Google, the low quality Pakistan firms will be replaced by high-quality custom writing firms. While in the past these low-quality companies provided clear cues to professors because of low-quality and plagiarism, the winner-companies will make authentic essays, making the search for plagiarism for universities even harder.
